Of the 700 islands and 2,000 islets, called cays (keys), making up the archipelago, only about 30 are inhabited. Some are little more than boulders that appear and disappear with the rise and fall of the ocean. Some are long and thin and stretch for many miles. Still others are home to thousands of busy people. The vast majority of the islands, however, are deserted, with pristine beaches and tropical forests that are untouched by humans.
Grand Turk is where the government of the tiny island mission bay camping group has its headquarters. It s also the location of the capitol city, Cockburn Town. Cockburn, by the way, is pronounced Coburn. This town of 3,500 is a happening place. Grand Turk is not top of the list as far as tourism is concerned, but it is a little less expensive than its more popular neighbor, Providenciales. The island itself has little going for it. It does have some fine beaches and the snorkeling is good, but it lacks aesthetic appeal. There is no lush tropical vegetation here, few color
Feast from the Sea The conch pronounced konk is chief among the many varieties of goodies gathered from the ocean. Claimed by the locals to be an aphrodisiac, conch can be prepared in numerous ways: for conch salad the flesh is chopped, spiced, and eaten raw with vegetables and lime juice; mission bay camping cracked conch is beaten and fried; and, finally, there are conch fritters.
