It s been many years since I began writing travel green mountain reservoir camping books. Over those years I ve visited numerous exotic destinations: magnificent beaches, wild and remote mountain retreats, painted deserts, and bustling, historic cities, but of all those incredible places the islands of the Bahamas are my favorite. Time and again I return to Nassau, Freeport, Abaco, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, and I continue to be inspired by their beauty. There truly is no other place I d rather spend a vacation. The Bahamas have everything, from bustling international cities not too big, not too small to tiny islets where it seems no human foot has ever stepped. The weather is sometimes wild, but not for long. The gentle sea breezes, the hot sun, and those great stretches of shallow, emerald water bounded by blinding white strips of sand are irresistible.

The islands became known as Bahama, from the Spanish baja mar, or shallow sea. Almost immediately, Europeans began enslaving the Lucayans. By the turn of the 16th century, they had almost been wiped out and a new source of cheap labor was needed. As early as 1503, the Portuguese were enslaving Africans and for several years they controlled the burgeoning industry. By 1520, however, white slave traders of assorted nationalities were going directly to the source.

With a total combined land mass of less than 5,400 square miles, the islands of the Bahamas constitute one of the smallest countries in the world. Tourism has brought prosperity to the Bahamas. But it hasn t spoiled the great natural beauty of the islands. In the early days, as in the coastal boom towns of Florida and California, little attention was given to the damage unrestricted exploitation was inflicting on Nassau and New Providence. Today, there s a new feeling in the islands. A feeling that the unique beauty of the archipelago must be preserved. Conservation is the new watchword of the Bahamas.

Covering some 48 square miles, Middle Caicos is the largest island lake billy chinook camping in the Caicos group and, with a population of only 300, it s also the least developed. But it s one of the most interesting of the islands at least, as far as historians and archeologists are concerned. There are 38 pre-Columbian Lucayan Indian sites on the island. The locals are welcoming and love to see visitors. This wild and remote land has towering lake billy chinook camping limestone cliffs and undiscovered stretches of white, sandy shore. There are huge caves in the limestone with crystal clear lakes, stalagmites and stalactites, to explore. The islanders live in three tiny communities Conch Bar, Lorimers and Bambarra, lake billy chinook camping each barely more than collections of small, primitive dwellings and there are a number of run-down, outlying farms. To enjoy a vacation here you ll need to be able to leave everything behind. There s rarely an in-room TV, and telephones are few and far between. Very few home comforts are available, and restaurants, what few there are, offer little more than the basics. What you can expect, though, are some fine beaches, a getaway beyond your imagination, and quiet times under blue skies and a hot, tropical sun.

It s been many years since I began writing travel books. Over those years I ve visited numerous exotic destinations: magnificent beaches, wild and remote mountain retreats, lake billy chinook camping painted lake billy chinook camping deserts, and bustling, historic cities, lake billy chinook camping but of all those incredible places lake billy chinook camping the islands of the Bahamas are my favorite. Time and again I return to Nassau, Freeport, Abaco, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, and I continue to be inspired by their beauty. There truly is no other place I d rather spend a vacation. The Bahamas have everything, lake billy chinook camping from bustling international cities not too big, not too small to tiny islets where it seems no human foot has ever stepped. The weather is sometimes wild, but not for long. The gentle sea breezes, the hot sun, and those great stretches of shallow, emerald water bounded by blinding white strips of sand are irresistible.

Taylor s Guest House is owned and run by Maria Taylor. This guest house offers only the basics. Three of the four rooms share a single bathroom; the other has its own. There s a single TV on the property, and there are no in-room phones. The beach is a short walk away. Maria is very congenial, though, and will to do her best to make your stay an enjoyable one. She can arrange local trips (snorkeling, etc.), and will provide meals on request. It s cheap, and very basic. Conch Bar, Middle Caicos, Turks and Caicos, BWI, 649-946-6161. From $55. No credit cards.

The sleek, silver tiger of the ocean is a curious creature, however, and will often follow you around, which can be a little unnerving. If you happen to be feeding the local reef fish, which you shouldn t do, you should always be on the lookout for something bigger. visit to Grand Turk. It s a catalog of the history of the tiny island group, and you ll find many unique and interesting artifacts on display. For instance, some 50% of the museum s displays are centered around the remains of the wreck of Molasses Reef. That s where the Spanish caravel, name unknown, was found. It sank off Grand Turk sometime prior to 1513, making it the oldest known shipwreck in the Americas. When the wreck was first discovered, it was thought to be the wreck of one of Christopher Columbus ships, the Pinta, but this was not the case. It seems there s no evidence that the Pinta ever returned to Grand Turk. Today, little is left of the hull of the wreck, but what remains is on display, along with artifacts from the wreck. There are also some pre-Columbian artifacts, including a whole room dedicated to the Taino culture, with a Taino paddle dated to around 1100 AD. Open 9 am until 4 pm weekdays, and 9 am until 1 pm on Saturdays. Tours of the museum silver lake campground ca are conducted weekdays at 2 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, 50 for students. It s located in Guinep House, Front Street, Cockburn Town. 649-946-2160.

Rays, on the whole, are not dangerous. Tread on a stingray buried in the sand, however, and you re probably in for a trip to the local hospital. The ray s first reaction is self-preservation, and its natural instinct is to lash out with its murderous tail. Unless threatened or trodden on, however, it s pretty much harmless and fascinating to watch as it flaps over the sandy bottom. Just be careful where you re putting your feet.
